Year 9 IMPACT Program
LEARNING AT KILVINGTON
Year 9 is a critical juncture in a student’s educational journey. It is a time of rapid mental and physical development and desire for independence – a time where they look to parents, teachers and peers to help shape their attitudes, perspectives and character.
The Year 9 Curriculum continues to prepare students as they move towards VCE studies, while also enabling them to develop critical skills and values for success beyond their academic pursuits.
How can we equip students to thrive in an interconnected world where they need to understand and appreciate different perspectives and world views, interact respectfully with others, and take responsible action towards sustainability and collective wellbeing?

A SNAPSHOT
Kilvington’s Year 9 Impact program is an intense and integrated year-long program that commences at the end of Year 8, concluding at the end of Year 9. It includes:
- Real-world experiences that include creating a social enterprise (partnering with Monash University), community-based volunteering and international and domestic expedition experiences.
- The development of new skills through contemporary and progressive electives designed to prepare students for future learning.
- Multiple ecosystems of learning through partnerships with organisations such as Monash University, WeWork and the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
- 4-stage level of learning and development: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Societal and Global. Students start by understanding their personal strengths and weaknesses before learning how to trust and connect with their cohort and teachers. They then advance to gaining a broader perspective of the society in which they live.
It's Everyone's Business Program - a partnership with Monash University
This unique, exclusive partnership with Monash University allows Year 9 students to create a social enterprise designed to positively impact a social issue facing Melbourne, such as homelessness, racism, domestic violence, disability, LGBTQI+ and mental health. Students work in small teams, develop business skills and collaborate to successfully produce a final product/service.
The students conclude the program by showcasing their progress and pitching their final ideas in an expo format at Monash University in front of their peers, family, and staff. Attendees then vote for the 'People's Choice Award' and a panel chooses an overall winner.

As a leader of a civic space, a woman and an immigrant, I was incredibly touched to see young minds being shaped around the complex understanding of social issues and the realisation that privilege comes with responsibility. A program such as IMPACT creates the connection between purpose and career, social responsibility and business imperatives, and most importantly, it builds self-reflection during a highly formative period in a young person's life. It’s weird how you can grow as a person more in a couple of days than in an entire year! By leaving my comfort zone I realised how fulfilling and exciting my life could be. Usually before speaking in front of such a large number of people I would “calculate” reasons to speak or not and I would overthink. Something that I must say is how I could not have volunteered to speak and been braver than my past self without the constant encouragement from the Monash University team who run the It's Everyone's Business program (especially Al). It’s weird how you can grow as a person more in a couple of days than in an entire year!
